The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
