In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
