Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
