Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
