The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Comes After Lukewarm Response
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
The news mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.
Here is the complete content from the president's memo:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to endure.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
His leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having spent the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all eager to continue witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.
The President

Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. Then, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary reads. "Challenge the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that shift every match. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or go big, gamble everything, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as production advances.
